English Training at the Maryland English Institute (MEI)                            University of Maryland (UMD), College Park

 

MEI provides a full-time intensive English training program for post high-school students, including the pre-2+2 transfer students who do not have sufficient English proficiency. On finishing the English instruction, most students go on to enroll in various US universities.

Background on MEI

? The Director of the Maryland English Institute is Ms. Elizabeth Driver.

? MEI employs only full-time teachers who have Master’s degrees in teaching English as a second language. 

? MEI students take 25 hours of weekly instruction.

? Semesters are 14 weeks.  Summer semesters are 7 weeks.

? Most students graduate as advanced beginners.

? To gauge English proficiency, entrance and exit exams are required, as well as an institutional TOEFL exam.

Applying to MEI

? To apply, students must complete the application as it appears on the MEI website and submit it directly to MEI with the $60 application fee and required supporting documents.

? Students should NOT use the Chinese-language link from our website to send their application via ApplyESL.com. Doing so will cost at least $100.

? Students who are admitted to MEI (but not to the University of Maryland, College Park) pay full university fees and have access to nearly everything that UMD students use: libraries, computer labs, recreation centers, campus shuttle transportation, etc.

? One important exception is that MEI-only students are not eligible for on-campus housing. They must find off-campus housing. (Our strong recommendation is that MEI student’s room with people who do not share their first language. Students will make faster progress in English if they use the language at home as well as in the classroom.)
